Tankless Water Heaters: Choose for Demand and Installation Fit
Tankless water heaters produce domestic hot water as it is needed rather than relying only on a finite stored supply. Selection depends on simultaneous demand, required temperature rise, fuel and the installation work needed to support the appliance.
Choose the system type around the project
The collection includes several technologies and system arrangements. Compare the complete hot-water requirement before choosing a model or efficiency tier.
Non-condensing
Requires its own approved venting arrangement. A lower equipment price should be compared with the cost and practicality of the exhaust route.
Condensing
Recovers additional heat and produces condensate that needs proper handling. Venting, drainage and utility requirements must be checked for the selected model.
Storage-assisted or multiple units
Some projects use hybrid storage or coordinated heaters to serve peaks. Choose these from the actual load profile rather than assuming one tankless appliance suits every building.
Size for winter use and distinguish delivery delay
For Toronto and GTA homes, compare output at cold inlet-water conditions and the intended delivery temperature. Add the fixtures likely to operate together; a maximum flow rating does not establish unlimited simultaneous capacity.
A long wait at a distant tap can be a distribution issue rather than a heating-capacity shortage. If recirculation is proposed, identify its pump, controls and approved plumbing return arrangement separately.
Compare the full replacement cost
Assess gas or other utility capacity, electrical provision, approved venting, condensate where applicable, water connections and maintenance access. Product families and generations in the catalogue have different requirements.
A complete quote includes removal, pipe changes, service valves, control setup and commissioning. For commercial use, verify the model's application and warranty conditions. Consider water quality and ongoing flushing or filter care rather than treating an on-demand appliance as maintenance-free.
Prepare a useful equipment brief
Bring the old nameplate, installation photographs and a list of overlapping water uses. These checks help identify a suitable configuration.
Tankless project checklist
- Record peak and sustained hot-water demand.
- Compare winter output at the required temperature rise.
- Confirm fuel and residential or commercial application.
- Distinguish capacity from distribution delays.
- Review venting, drainage and utility work.
- Include service access and commissioning.
Choose tankless water heating through a complete demand and site assessment. Compare installed solutions with the same delivery requirements before selecting a family or model.
