Add Value to Your Home With a Fireplace Surround

What is a Fireplace Surround?

A fireplace surround is an architectural element that literally surrounds the hearth of a fireplace. It usually includes a mantle or shelf on which decorative objects are placed.

Fireplace surrounds are designed to enhance the ambiance of your living space. The design of these pieces varies and will often be based on the type of fuel that is being burned. For example, wood burning fireplaces look very rustic, whereas gas logs give off a warm glow.

Whether you choose a classic design or something more modern, you’ll enjoy the benefits of having a fireplace in your home year round, as the surround adds to the ambience of the room.

Cozy Comfort Plus offers a variety of fireplace surrounds in various sizes and price ranges. In addition, for a unique look, we can custom build one for you.

A Design Tailored to Your Taste

There may be a mantel over the fireplace, usually hung from the wall studs if they’re not covered by drywall, or placed on a shelf built into the brick walls. A fireplace surround consists of columns attached to either side of the mantel, and can have two variations:

  • Flat style, which is mounted flush to the wall
  • Column style, which is set away from the wall

Note: A variation of column style is known as cabinet style. This is a column style surround that can also serve as a storage or wall unit.

What Kind of Mantel Will Work Best in Your Home?

Make your house functional and stylish with a modern or transitional fireplace mantel. Our collection of mantels ranges from contemporary to traditional in any size you require.

Keep in mind that a custom design can be crafted to suit your unique style. Most styles can be made as a cabinet or corner units that will accommodate traditional, gas or electric fireplaces.

Design note: In front of the fireplace there is usually a section known as a hearth. This is made of fire-resistant materials such as tile, stone or brick. If hearth construction or renovation is a part of your project, it is highly recommended to complete the installation before the fireplace surround is constructed.

When choosing or designing a surround, the parameters of your fireplace are to be considered. These are elements such as:

  • The size of the hearth (if one is in place)
  • The heating source (e.g., gas, electricity or wood)
  • Safety clearances required (depending on location)
  • The existing woodwork, if applicable
  • Your furniture style and taste
  • The room size, configuration and purpose

Choosing Materials for a Fireplace Surround

Beauty and functionality are the hallmarks of a great fireplace surround. We can provide surround solutions with built-in storage for extra space or carpentry to suit your décor. We’re here to assist you in creating the perfect design and selecting the best materials for your fireplace surround.

Choosing the right materials will help you create the perfect atmosphere for your home. There are six commonly used materials that stand the test of time.

Steel, concrete and stone are the most modern options, while tile is more traditional. Brick is versatile, offering either a modern or traditional feel, depending on the design.

1. STEEL
Steel comes in many different finishes to complement and enhance many types of interior. It can be said that a steel fireplace surround will give a modern or industrial feel to a room. Plus, it is easy to clean and maintain.

Steel is usually painted with an enamel paint. This is what gives the finished product its color. Another, more durable, option is to use a powder coat which is a clear coating applied over the metal.

2. WOOD
While a less obvious choice for a fireplace surround, wood makes a statement. To be sure about the safety of this choice, it is recommended to check the local building codes to see if wood surrounds are permitted. The cost and durability of a wood surround makes it a popular choice. In fact, you can find many different types of wood that will work well in your home.

3. CONCRETE
Contemporary interiors can benefit from concrete fireplace surrounds with clean lines and natural finishes. Due to its ability to retain heat, it also helps to warm a room. With a wide range of colours and textures, concrete is a durable material that makes it ideal for fireplace surrounds.

Choosing concrete is an easy way to update the look of your living space without spending too much money or time. Concrete fireplace surrounds are available in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes.

4. STONE
Stone fireplace surrounds add rustic charm to any room. In addition to radiating heat, the stones are effective at warming up interior spaces faster than other materials, and they also keep them warm for longer periods of time. There are a number of ways and styles in which stone can be used to surround your fireplace, making it a very versatile choice. So, if you’re looking for something that will make your home more comfortable, look no further than this type of fire feature.

5. BRICK
Brick can be used to create a sense of warmth and classic style in either modern or traditional interiors. There are many different colours and shapes of bricks, and they can be arranged in a variety of patterns to create looks that add texture and colour to a space. Accordingly , brick is one of the most versatile materials available for interior design.

Note: There are two main types of brick – natural and artificial. Natural bricks are made from clay, which has been fired at high temperatures to harden it. Artificial bricks are manufactured using cement, sand and water. Both have their own benefits and drawbacks. For example, natural bricks are generally softer and easier to work with, but they tend to crack easily. On the other hand, artificial bricks are stronger and last longer.

6. TILE
You can create a unique fireplace surround by using tile. Material, colour, size, and texture options are endless. In addition, it is suitable for both interior and exterior designs. In the design of a fireplace surround, tile can be fully integrated. A fireplace surround made of tile can be tailored to meet a variety of style and price points.

When my furnace broke down last winter, we were without heat for two weeks while the HVAC company sourced the parts from the US. I wanted to install a gas fireplace insert to replace my existing gas log set and to act as a backup heat source (e.g. furnace breaks down again, no power). I had a number of questions about the various gas fireplace inserts (e.g. size and fit in my old fireplace) and I contacted several HVAC companies.

I found that Brian from Cozy Comfort Plus to be the most helpful and he also gave me the best price. I was home at the time and I saw that the Cozy team did a great job installing the gas fireplace insert (e.g., assembling and fitting the insert, bending and capping the chimney, etc.). If you are looking for a gas fireplace insert, I would highly recommend that you give Brian a call.
